PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Your PTA is off to a great start! Nearly 400 DeWitt families have shown their support of what we do by joining the PTA. (Of course, if you are not yet a member, there is still time to join and take advantage of all the wonderful perks donated by area businesses.) Our Spirit Items Sale has proven very popular and is still going strong. Our Football Tailgate was great fun for all who attended. And we hosted a Parent Education Program (PEP) in September that gave DeWitt families the opportunity to learn more about almost every facet of DeWitt Schools. On a personal note, I’ve enjoyed being able to meet so many DeWitt parents at these events and look forward to seeing you at future PTA activities! If you ever have any questions or ideas for the PTA, please contact me or any PTA board member. We would love to hear from you!

Football Tailgate Party

I would like to thank everyone who attended the Tailgate before the Homecoming football game.  It was fun to see everyone getting acquainted and kids running around having fun.  Thanks to everyone who helped: Dave & Amy Tratt, Theresa Butcher, Mike & Laura Heinritz (& American Rental), Laurie Ward, Brendan Ward, Michelle, McKenna, & Madison Cunningham, Peter Tratt, Jacob, Zach & Hannah Acre, Leann Matta, Barbara Mack & Family, Cheryl Schimizzi, Bill Kirkendall (I apologize if I have forgotten anyone) and especially the families that came out and had some fun!!
Thanks, Stephanie Acre

Membership update

Thank you to the 355+ families and 33 staff members who have joined the PTA already this year! We are only a few short of the number of memberships sold for the entire 2003-2004 school year! The first batch of member cards (225 families) were delivered in Friday folders Sept. 17th. The second batch (150 cards) went home last week and we’re hoping to have a batch go out every Friday in the weeks to come. We hope you’re taking advantage of the generous offers from many of our area businesses. If you received your card on 9/17, your Subway coupon expires 12/31/04. If your card was issued 10/1 or later, your coupon will expire 1/31/05. If you have any questions regarding membership, call Jill Lentz at 669-1474 or Cammie Cantrell, 668-2301 or by e-mail at cammie.cantrell@comcast.net

Parent Education Night

The September 21 "Get to Know DeWitt Schools Night" was both informative and fun. A big thank you to those who shared their resources, talents, and time: Jerry Jennings, Greg Shubel (a great building host!), David Potter, Pat Ryan, Ruth Foster, Tina Laurent, Susan Friend, Mary Lou Searls, Suzanne Nelson, Robin Scheffler, Terri Severy, Greg Wells, Nate Lindsay, Pat Howard, Mary Osmar. Thanks also to Lori Hutting, Brooke Broughton, and Eric Wiefrich for contributing program materials. Three cheers for the DeWitt PTA members who also helped make the event possible. To give up another evening when you are all already so very busy is appreciated more than you know!

Our next Parent Education Program is scheduled for Tuesday, November 16. Watch for information in Friday Folders for this next opportunity to learn more about your children and their world.

Building Volunteer Opportunities

There is still time to return that volunteer form to your PTA building rep if you would like to get involved. Parents are always needed for special projects in classrooms, building decorating, and assemblies, as well as PTA activities like Conference Cuisine, the Holiday Gift Shop, Spring Carnival, Mileage Club and Teacher Appreciation. If you have questions on these or other opportunities to help, contact Teresa Brown or Laura Heinritz at FECC, Roz Kramer at Schavey Road, Leann Lerie Matta at Scott School, and Lori Fox at Herbison Woods.

Conferences are Coming!

Conference time is scheduled in your child’s building on November 3rd and 4th. Here are some how-to’s from the National PTA for making the experience a positive and informative one!

Give positive feedback and show appreciation for teachers and principals.

Approach interactions with a positive attitude and an open mind.

Share your child’s strengths, talents and interests with his/her teacher.

Share expectations and set goals together with your child.

Attend parent/teacher conferences with specific questions you want to ask.

Indicate best way to give you information (phone, e-mail, notes, etc.)

Understand and reinforce school rules and expectations with your child at home.

Each elementary will schedule Halloween parties and parades. Check your Friday Folders for dates and times.

New to DeWitt?

If you’ve just moved to DeWitt, then Fast Friends is for you. This is a service provided by a PTA committee which will match you with an established DeWitt resident from your child’s building who is willing to be your resource and instant friend! If this is of interest to you, then please call Laura Tagsold at 669-7469 or Dayna Hedlund at 669-8694.
