Message from the President - Deb Blake

Welcome back for the DeWitt Elementary Schools’ 2006 - 2007 School Year.  The PTA has a great board in place and we are excited about the programs and activities we are planning.

The DeWitt Elementary PTA exists to support our kids, families and schools.  We provide programs such as Mileage Club and Holiday Gift Shop, as well as sponsor Staff Appreciation Week and Conference Meals for the teachers.  We host Parent Education Programs, Family Fun Nights, publish a Student Directory, and offer family events such as Carnival, Skate Nights at Edru, Homecoming tailgate and the Spring Fun Run.  And we give money to the schools to help cover special costs such as assemblies, field trips and enrichment materials.  This year, thanks to the great community support for the Carnival, we are giving $32,000 to the schools!

I am looking forward to a fun and productive year.  I encourage all of you to be involved.  Here are some suggestions:

1)  Join the PTA.  It is a great way to support your child's education and show that you value our programs.  The cost is only $8 for the year and includes a Student Directory and a card with a list of many great "perks" that you can use around town.

2)  Volunteer.  Our building representatives and committees will be asking for your help throughout the year for various activities.

3)  Participate in PTA events.  The PTA presents Parent Education Programs during the school year and we host several fun family events.  And you are always welcome at our General Business meetings which are held the 2nd Tuesday of each Month at Schavey Road Elementary starting at 7:00 p.m.

4) We are also looking for someone to be the Committee Chairperson for the Spring Run.  Call Deb Blake if interested (668-0500).

Family Skate Night

Did someone say Skating or Rollerblading?  How about a party for just DeWitt Families?  Why don’t you come join us for our own Private Skating Party at EDRU Skate*A*Rama in Holt on Thursday, November 2nd, 2006, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Admission is $5.00 and this covers roller skate rental.  If you have your own skates or blades, bring them.  Rollerblade rental is an additional $2.00.  We can also enjoy Laser Tag for $2.00.

A portion of the admission price comes back to our schools and we get a rebate if we have over 200 skaters!  We can have fun and make money at the same time! Now that’s a great fundraiser! If you have any questions, please call Kristi Lewis at 669-8820. We’ll see you there for a GREAT Time!

Parent Education Program Night

Our first parent program night will be held on Thursday, October 26th at 7pm at Schavey Road Elementary.  DeWitt's very own Terri Severy will be speaking with parents about Jim Fay's "Love and Logic." Mrs. Severy, who is a counselor at the elementary level, is a Love and Logic trainer and will be offering her expertise to interested parents.  Childcare will be provided. As a special surprise, Potter Park Zoo will be coming with several animals to educate the students. It is sure to be a great night for all. If you plan on attending and will be using the childcare, please RSVP to me, Alison Kahl, at 669-5005. I am looking forward to seeing all of you.

Schavey Road School News

We are off to a great start at Schavey Road Elementary School.  Thank you to all the families for such a positive response to the request for volunteers.  We are busy getting organized for many wonderful activities for the 2006-2007 school year.  We would like to thank Penni Sweeney, Kristi Lewis, David Lewis and Theresa Brown for popping popcorn at our Open House, which was Thursday, September 14th.  Our open house was a success and a great way to begin the year!

Scott School News

We have had a successful start to the school year.  We have already had an Open House and a Book Fair.  Thank you to the following Book Fair volunteers:  Tami Bonnet, Amy Thomas, Michelle Phelps, Sarah Bannon, Krista Fiero, Susan Eaton, Beth Frayer, Jennifer Casey, Cathy Romkema, Kelly Shankel, Ana Horn,  Susan Garmo, Karima Esmail, Beth Hanna, Melissa Mazuca, Marcy Fuhr, Debby Hanna, Alicia Hostetler, Claudia Ciucanu, Deborah Reid, Kelly Fairchild, Ann Marie Bates, Kay Udry, Nancy Zamiara, Shannon Colarossi, Dawn Strojny, Cammie Cantrell, Cindy Brushaber, Amy Williams and Casie Zillgitt.  As you can see, it takes a lot of people just to help run a 3 day event.  We really appreciate everyone who has filled out our PTA volunteer forms.  We will be contacting people for the Teachers' Conference Cuisine in November.

Herbison Woods Happenings

Welcome back to all Herbison Woods students and parents. Let's get right to business...If you haven't yet joined the Dewitt Elementary PTA or filled out our PTA volunteer form, please visit us at our table when you attend the Herbison Woods Open House on MONDAY, SEPT. 18 at 5pm (5th graders) and 6pm (6th graders). We have a great bunch of volunteers, so please join us (believe it or not, your children really DO like to see you in and around school even if they say they don’t!)

Picture Day at HW is THURSDAY, SEPT. 21.

Again, we thank you for your support. If you have any questions or concerns regarding PTA, please contact Donna Sowulewski at 669-1701 or scottdonna@peoplepc.com or Cindy Brushaber 668-0577 or 5brush@comcast.net.

Fast Friends

Are you new to the school system?  Or, do you want to lend a hand to someone who is new to the school system?  Fast Friends is a great way to meet new people and exchange information on topics ranging from what a school day is like to whom to contact for local clubs and organizations. Please feel free to contact me for further information or complete a Volunteer Form that will be available at all the Open Houses.  Lori Fox   668-0033

 PTA Homecoming Tailgate

Your PTA is joining forces with the DeWitt School District to bring you another spectacular Homecoming Tailgate event on Friday, September 29.  Look for the tents outside the stadium after the Homecoming Parade.

Bring your lawn chair or blanket and join us for a stadium picnic, music and friendship before DeWitt meets Williamston on the football field!  The Panther mascot will be on hand and you can enjoy the rhythm of the Drum Line!  PTA Spirit items and clothing will also be available if you want to pick up your stadium cushion, blanket or Panther sweatshirt before the game!

Families new to DeWitt:  This is a great way to meet new neighbors and jump into the Panther Spirit!  Not planning to attend the game?  Come anyway!  We’ll be waiting for you under the tent!

Parade starts at 5:15 pm at the High School Baseball Field.

Meal Deal:

Hot dog, chips, drink and cookie: $3.00!
