Parents and educators enriching the lives of
children at DeWitt Elementary PTA, P.O. Box 695,
DeWitt, Michigan 48820
Message from the President The end of the 2006 - 2007 school year is fast approaching. We only have 10 weeks of learning and fun before summer vacation begins. These last 10 weeks will be filled with many activities that the PTA sponsors such as Carnival, Mileage Club, Conference Cuisine, Teacher Appreciation Week, Skate Night, Meet the Candidates (of the School Board) Night, Fun Run, and Field Day Popsicle treats. Please help out wherever possible. Nominating Committee We would like to thank all of the out-going PTA Board Members for all of their hard work and dedication to our schools. Being on the Board is fun and rewarding. We need to fill several positions for next year. Call Deb Blake (668-0500) if you feel that you can volunteer just a few hours per month to this worthy cause. 2007-2008 PTA Board Openings
Program Night Our next parent education night will be held on Tuesday April 24th from 7:00-8:00pm. This is our annual "Meet the Candidates" night. There will be a new twist this year. Tina Temple, superintendent of schools, will be joining us to inform any parents on the sinking fund. This is an informal drop in where parents can come at their leisure to discuss burning topics with potential board members and speak with Ms. Templin about our financial outlook for our schools. This is a great way to make an informed decision at the polls! Scott School Update We would like to thank all of the Carnival Basket Coordinators for all of their hard work. Come on out to the Carnival and see what our school has to offer to bid on at the Silent Auction. Mileage Club will start when we return from Spring Break. We will be having it on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 7 weeks during the afternoon recess. Look for more information and volunteer opportunities next week. Herbison Woods Happenings Hopefully this note finds all of our HW parents and students planning on attending the awesome PTA Carnival on Saturday, March 24 from 11am to 3pm. Our carnival coordinators have been working so hard to organize this great event, our primary PTA fundraiser of the year. That said, looking forward to seeing everyone there! Our thanks to Mary Kovac-Iciek and Teresa Brown for volunteering on Spring Picture Day! We appreciate your willingness to help. Spring brings lots of volunteer opportunities at Herbison Woods. Before we know it, we'll be calling on all of those who signed up to provide food, etc. for the Spring Conference Cuisine. Staff Appreciation Week will follow and we'll be looking for help during that hectic (but much appreciated!) time. Lastly, two awesome opportunities are available for anyone interested in filling the Herbison Woods Representative PTA positions for the next school years. It is a great way to get involved and meet fellow parents, students and HW staff. Please contact Donna Sowulewski at 669-1701 or scottdonna@peoplepc.com if you have questions. We can work together to get things going. Thanks in advance! Donna Sowulewski Cindy Brushaber HW PTA Representatives

Safe Routes to School Safe Routes to School (SR2S) is a national movement to make it safe, convenient, and fun for children to bicycle and walk to school. The most successful programs incorporate the five E’s: education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement, and evaluation. The goal of Safe Routes to School is to get more children bicycling and walking to schools on an everyday basis. This improves community and personal health, benefits the environment, increases safety, and helps to decrease traffic congestion around schools. In 1969, about half of all students walked or bicycled to school. Today, however, the story is very different. Nationally, fewer than 15 percent of all school trips are made by walking or bicycling, one-quarter are made on a school bus, and over half of all children arrive at school in private automobiles. This decline in walking and bicycling has had an adverse effect on traffic congestion and air quality around schools, as well as pedestrian and bicycle safety. In addition, a growing body of evidence has shown that children who lead sedentary lifestyles are at risk for a variety of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Safety issues are a big concern for parents, who consistently cite traffic danger as a reason why their children are unable to bicycle or walk to school. The purpose of the SR2S Program is to address these issues head on. At its heart, the SR2S Program empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity once again. The Federal Program makes funding available for a wide variety of programs and projects, from building safer street crossings to establishing programs that encourage children and their parents to walk and bicycle safely to school. We have such a great sidewalk community to start with that this seems like a great opportunity for our school children. If you have any questions or would like to be involved, please contact Deirdre Thompson at 669-9077. |
